“Advent” means “coming” or “arrival.” During the season of Advent, we celebrate Christ’s coming into the world and watch with expectant hope for his coming again. In its historical origins, the season of Advent was patterned after the season of Lent, a six-week period of penitence and preparation for Easter. As shared by the Presbyterian Church of the USA, PC(USA). More info here.
As we shared earlier this week, This year Advent begins Sunday December 3, 2023. Advent always starts the 4th Sunday before Christmas eve so the beginning date changes depending on what day Christmas Eve, the night before Christmas, falls in that particular year.

What happens?
The Candles of Advent – A candle of advent is lite each Sunday during Advent. There is a candle of hope, a candle of peace, a candle of joy and a candle of love. A white candle represents the Christ Candle. It is lite to signify the Birth of Christ has occurred.

A lectionary is a book of Bible readings or list of references to be read from Scripture on certain days of the year. Historically, a lectionary took one year to go through; some modern lectionaries, such as the Revised Common Lectionary, are on a three-year rotation. They typically follow the liturgical calendar. Some Christian denominations use lectionaries, and some do not. Some Ministers use the lectionary while some do not. Some Ministers will use the lectionary sometimes while also focusing on a series or message focus at other times.
I can only share my knowledge and understanding concerning Advent. My main focus, as maybe for some Christians, is the reflection, study, prayer and giving gratitude for the birth of Jesus Christ and the hope of a 2nd coming.
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for sending your only begotten son. I ask you to forgive me of my sins. May Christ’s blood wash away my sins. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen
