Hey Friends,
Do you ever have those nights where you go to sleep but an hour later you awaken. And no matter what you do, you can’t go back to sleep? I had that happen Friday night.
I had plans to go visit my aunt about 40 highway minutes away in Hendersonville. That is south of Asheville in the Western North Carolina mountains.
So my Saturday started with about 3 hours sleep total. I was dragging more than a possum drags its dinner. That is a lot!
I was tittering between calling my Aunt to cancel or trying it. But that little voice was telling me “You need to do this Leslie”. My Aunt was visiting from out west and would return home soon. So I put on my big girl panties and hit the road.
I am so glad that I did.
A Blessing is just a step away
I picked up my aunt to have an adventure. She doesn’t drive anymore so she needed to get out of the house. Not for doctor appointments or physical therapy but for Fun!
We went to the Food Co-op and looked around. She found a really cute pair of earrings. After we finished that adventure , we were heading back to her rental house but we knew we didn’t want the fun to end. So we decided that we were going to “loaf the roads”. Having a nice Saturday afternoon drive was to be had. We drove through town looking at the older historic houses that had been refurbished but maintained their character.
Aunt Becki received a phone call. It was her bother checking in on her. So we got an idea in our pretty little heads.
My uncle Jerry is a minister at an adorable little church. That church reminds me of this song “Church in the Wildwood” Give it a listen here. https://youtu.be/k4zS326x0C4?si=GypHPYcAy2poGNcK Do you remember this sweet little song?

Chapel in the National Forest
Back to the story– We told Uncle Jerry that we were going to go see his little church. He said ” Okay, Well have fun.” We had drove by a few more houses on our way to the church. Uncle Jerry called back to let us know he would meet us at the church. “We will see you there.”
Aunt Becki and I had the address in the GPS but somehow, we got lost. Uncle Jerry called again to tell us, he will wait by the ice cream stand, right when you enter the forest. A little while later, he called again. “I am here. Where are y’all?” “Well, We don’t exactly know. “
You see, the GPS isn’t always reliable in the mountains. It will tell you to turn right on the Something-another road. But there ain’t a road there. Just a drop-off on the side of the mountain!

Back to the story– Uncle Jerry knows us , we are descended from Polly Warren, you know. Polly was an expert at getting loss. Anyway, He gave us his directions, and we add what we remember from him to the GPS instructions, we finally got to the ice cream stand. Even if it was 30 minutes after he had arrived. (And he had the longest drive) But Aunt Becki and I were on a Saturday afternoon drive, you know.
We followed him through the Pisgah National Forest in the mountains. Turns and twists later, we arrived at that precious little Chapel in the Woods. Be Still My Heart!
We stepped out of the car to the sounds of the creek running besides the church. Trees all around. The Stone Church in all her Glory! The well kept little graveyard. And being together in the Appalachian Mountains. We were in God’s country my friends!
I started the day , exhausted and not wanting to get out of my PJs. My day ended sitting in this old Rock church, spending time with my 83 year old Aunt and her almost 80 year old Brother with the church office door open to hear the creek water flowing, the birds singing, hikers and their four legged friends walking down the trail and my memory memorizing every moment in my heart and mind. I am so blessed with these special moments.
Don’t hesitate to take the next step in the journey of your life. No need to worry about what might happen. You have the Best Co-pilot right beside you. :.)
Thank you God! For being right beside us as we walk this life on earth! You know that we need. Amen.
